Lovely Movies: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

The Miss Peregrine trilogy made me fangirl before even dipping in a toe. I bought the books early on, but that whole Schrödinger's Cat scenario of enjoyment vs disappointment had a real hold on me and so I still haven't read them.

But I will read them soon, as I adored the movie. Tim Burton knows how to create visual masterpieces, and the cast was phenomenal (and included a bunch of my favorite actors). I got the impression there were some flaws in the logic or continuity sometimes, but that can all be forgiven as it was so very magical and highly entertaining.

All the trailers showed way too much of the story, so instead I'm posting this:

I expected it to be more of a children's movie but found it actually bordered on horror at times. Nothing too traumatic, but something to be aware of in case you're easily creeped out or planning on bringing kids to see it on the big screen.

Anyway, I'll buy the dvd either way, but I'm really crossing my fingers that they'll release some sort of fancy special edition… Like a steelcase or something with embossing, ooh, or a slipcase! And a second disc with extras...

Lovely Movies: Big Game

Watching Samuel L. Jackson movies is pretty much a family tradition with me and my mom. Now it's not often we get to see him play a lead role on the big screen. So we wasted no time and went to see Big Game. It was awesome!

Not only was the other hero of this movie a kid, but there was a nice balance between a crazy plot and quite realistic action scenes. Yes, it was an over-the-top roller coaster ride, but some very silly things made it way more believable.

There was only one tiny thing that nagged me. This movie must have had a huge budget. So why was the framed wall of fame in the last scene a series of repeat pictures? Did they think no one would notice? It's all in the details, people! Anyway, don't let that little rant put you off. If you like Sam and you like action movies, definitely do watch this one!

Lovely Movies

It was my mom's birthday today and I took her to the movies to see "the Other Guys". She's a huge Samuel L. Jackson fan so when I found out his new movie premiered yesterday I knew I had to take her. It was tough keeping it a secret, but I managed to keep her in the dark until his face showed up on the screen.

Too bad he died after 5 minutes though.

Either way it was a fun movie. When watching the trailer I wasn't sure if we'd like the humor, but it was great! And the action was awesome too. It has some pretty original and totally out of the blue action scenes.

It was such a surprising movie in so many ways. And did you know Will Ferrell could sing? That alone is worth the watch really.

Did you see anything good lately? Maybe went to "the Other Guys" too?

Lovely Movies

Yesterday I just sort of fell into this movie. I missed the first half an hour, but the storyline isn't really complex, so it was easy enough to follow after that. "Without a Paddle" might be more of a guys movie and may seem a bit tasteless, especially after watching the trailer, but I (and my mom as well) really enjoyed it.

I was surprised at all the actors. Some I knew, such as Seth Green, and the guy who worked at the reception on E.R. (I believe his name was Jerry on that show). But also Matthew Lillard, whom I recognized from "Dead Man's Curve", that weird movie I have started twice but have never finished watching cause it's always on too late. The strange thing is, after watching this movie yesterday I saw him again tonight on Law & Order SVU. That happens sometimes, you hear of something or someone after a very long while or for the first time and all of a sudden they're everywhere. I have that with words a lot. Do you have that?

This might not be the most special and original movie I have ever seen, but it was very entertaining. And as the great Samuel L. Jackson once said: The goal is for you to be entertained, and if you haven't thought about your day-to-day life and you've enjoyed yourself during that movie, it's enough, it doesn't have to be this great oscar nominated movie.
Of course this wasn't a direct quote, but you get what he meant. And I agree, sometimes you want a truly great movie and sometimes you want "Snakes on a Plane". I think the variation is what makes it all good.
